Workshop on
 Switches for Pulsed Power Applications

March 23rd and 24th, 2023
Technical University Darmstadt and GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung

Hosted by the TU Darmstadt and the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, this year’s annual workshop of the ISP will focus on switch technologies for pulsed power applications. This may include:

 • Opening and Closing Switches
 • High Power and high frequency Semiconducting Switches / Solid State Switches
 • High Voltage Gas and Vacuum Switches
 • Trigger and Protection Technologies
 • Switch Cooling
 • Assemblies and Systems

This workshop is intended to regularly provide the possibility of networking within the pulsed power community and to support the scientific / technical exchange between science, industry and students. The frame of the workshop shall provide a more intimate opportunity for social and technical interaction than a large conference. The workshop is accompanied by a visit of the construction site of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) / GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and the annual member meeting of the ISP. The workshop is free of charge.

Venue

The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates a worldwide leading accelerator facility for research purposes. About 1,520 employees are working at GSI. In addition, every year approximately 1,000 researchers from universities and other research institutes around the world come to GSI to use the facility for experiments.
At GSI, FAIR is currently being built, an international accelerator facility for the research with antiprotons and ions which is being developed and constructed in cooperation with international partners. It is one of the world’s largest construction projects for international cutting-edge research. The FAIR project was initiated by the scientific community and researchers of GSI. The GSI accelerators will become part of the future FAIR facility and serve as the first acceleration stage.

By train: ICE, IC and EC trains stop at Darmstadt Station, which means it is very well connected with the German distance railway network. There are regional connections with Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Aschaffenburg, Mannheim and Heidelberg as well as Erbach and Eberbach.
Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof (main station) is a hub for tram and bus lines.

By car: You can reach Darmstadt from motorways A5 (from Frankfurt/M. – Heidelberg/Basel) and A67 (from Cologne/Wiesbaden – Mannheim). At the motorway junction ‘Autobahnkreuz Darmstadt’ take the exit towards Darmstadt/Stadtmitte.

By plane: The international airport Frankfurt Rhein-Main is located 25 km (15.5 miles) from Darmstadt. At the airport, regional bus lines depart from arrivals area B at Terminal 1 and arrivals areas D+E at Terminal 2. We recommend the express bus AirLiner (Terminals 1 and 2), which offers a convenient and fast 30-minute connection from the airport to Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof (main station), Luisenplatz and darmstadtium Congress Centre.
